  • RBI new guidelines for uniform compliance at a bank with CCO

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) came up with new guidelines for the appointment of Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) in banks to ensure effective compliance culture, independent corporate compliance function, and a strong compliance risk management programme at bank and group level.

The CCO shall be appointed for a minimum fixed tenure of not less than 3 years. The CCO shall be a senior executive of the bank, preferably in the rank of a General Manager or an equivalent position (not below two levels from the CEO). The CCO could also be recruited from market.

The central bank further said that there shall not be any ‘dual hatting’, which means the CCO shall not be given any responsibility which brings elements of conflict of interest, especially the role relating to the business.

The compliance function shall be subject to internal audit.

Recently Canada's Fraser Institute released The Economic Freedom of the World Report 2020, in which India slips 26 spots to the 105th position. The country was at the 79th spot in last year's rankings.

China has been ranked lower than India at the 124th position. Hong Kong and Singapore retain the top two positions with a score of 8.94 and 8.65 out of 10, respectively.

Since the first publication in 1996, numerous studies have used the data published in Economic Freedom of the World to examine the impact of economic freedom on investment, economic growth, income levels, and poverty rates. This report helps to measure economic freedom in an economy.

India reported a marginal decrease in the size of government from 8.22 to 7.16.
A score closer to 10 indicates a higher level of economic freedom.
